For those of you have been acquainted with anxiety, you can skip this paragraph. For those of you who aren’t sure, anxiety can be feelings of tension and ruminating thoughts of worry. It can be a physical experience where you experience trembling, increased heart rate and blood pressure, sweating and/or feeling weak. Anxiety can disrupt your sleep, relationships, work and overall wellbeing. It can be related to a trauma, hormone imbalance, anxiety disorder or something else going on in the body. Sometimes it is chronic or situational. Experiencing a death, financial worries, relationship changes, work stress, being bullied or excluded, chronic stress, withdrawal from substances and hormone imbalances are a few ways to spark anxiety. Acupuncture has been shown as an effective treatment for supporting the body and mind through the physical, emotional and spiritual effects of anxiety, whatever the root may be.
Here’s how:
Balances Neurotransmitters and Hormones:
When the body is in the stress response, like when it’s anxious, certain hormones will be
triggered to manage the stress (cortisol and adrenaline). This kind of chronic activation can reduce the happy chemicals (serotonin). So, it’s a double whammy. Acupuncture can help balance these out and give your body the space to recover.
Reduce Inflammation:
Acupuncture will regulate the release of inflammatory markers and chemicals in the body
that are associated with anxiety. Anxiety has been shown to lower immune function and
increase inflammation and the symptoms associated. Acupuncture has been shown to
restore immune function during anxiety!
Stimulate Parasympathetic Nervous System:
This will release the benefits immediately during your treatment. You will feel the initiation
of the relaxation response. The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for repairing,
digesting, resting and calm feelings within.
Brain Activation:
Acupuncture activates the middle brain, the primary somatosensory cortex, known to
reduce sensitivity to stress and pain while deactivating the analytical portion of the brain
that is responsible for anxiety and worry.
Acupuncture can be one place to find relief from anxiety. It will give you the space to come
to a place calm and balanced enough that you can see your life or situation clearly and be
guided towards your next steps. With things like anxiety, there isn’t usually one solution, it’s
more often than not, a sign to make bigger shifts in life. An acupuncture appointment is a
good start!
