Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect at my first massage appointment?
Please arrive a few minutes early so we can make sure your intake forms and health information are complete.
Your therapist will review your intake form, talk with you about your goals, and may include a brief assessment such as posture, range of motion, orthopedic testing, or blood pressure if needed.
Your therapist will leave the room while you undress to your comfort level and get settled under the sheets. After treatment, they may suggest home care, exercises, or follow-up recommendations.
Do I have to be in pain to book a massage?
No. Massage therapy can support pain relief, injury recovery, stress reduction, relaxation, sleep, mobility, and general body maintenance.
You are welcome to book whether you have a specific concern or simply want to feel better in your body.
Does massage hurt?
Massage should always stay within your comfort level. Some techniques may feel deeper or more focused, but you are always in control.
Please let your therapist know if you would like more or less pressure, a different technique, or if anything feels uncomfortable.
Will I be sore after treatment?
Some people feel mild soreness after a deeper or more targeted treatment, especially if they are new to massage or working through an area of tension or injury.
Your therapist will adjust treatment based on your body’s response and may offer home care suggestions to support recovery.
Is massage safe during pregnancy?
Yes, massage can be very supportive during pregnancy. Your therapist will use appropriate positioning and precautions and may check in about blood pressure or other considerations when needed.
Please let us know before your appointment if you are pregnant.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever feels comfortable. Your therapist will leave the room while you undress to your level of comfort and get settled under the sheets.
Massage can also be done through clothing if you prefer. We recommend removing jewelry before treatment.
Will I be covered during treatment?
Yes. Your therapist uses professional draping, which means only the area being treated is uncovered at any time.
Your comfort, privacy, and consent are always respected.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Treatment depends on your goals, symptoms, and consent. Common areas include the back, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, and feet.
More specific areas may be treated when clinically appropriate, but nothing is treated without your prior consent.
Why is assessment included?
Assessment helps your therapist understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and create a treatment plan that fits your needs.
It also helps track progress over time.
What is home care?
Home care may include simple stretches, strengthening exercises, hydrotherapy, breathing, posture suggestions, or other strategies to help you get the most from your treatment.
Your therapist will keep recommendations realistic and tailored to you.
What oil or products do you use?
Not every treatment requires oil or lotion. When lubricant is used, we commonly use a blend specific for RMTs and have hypoallergenic oils available
If you have allergies, sensitivities, or preferences, please let your therapist know before treatment.
Is massage covered by insurance?
Many extended health plans include coverage for Registered Massage Therapy. Coverage varies by plan, so please check with your insurance provider for details.
Harbour Health offers direct billing for select plans when available. Please see our Direct Billing page for more information.
